Avril Lavigne Plays Devil's Advocate as American Idol Judge

After watching Avril Lavigne guest judge on American Idol at the Los Angeles auditions Tuesday night and fighting back the urge to pull an Elvis on my television set (thankfully, I don't own a pistol), I know that I am not alone in the "Can't Wait" department regarding the arrival of new permanent judge Ellen DeGeneres. The American Idol Los Angeles auditions might have turned into a virtual snorefest if Avril Lavigne had signed on for both days (apparently, she had some dim-witted fans to bore somewhere), so we can thank Katy Perry for livening up the show. But it wasn't so much that Avril Lavigne was boring as it was that she made you uncomfortable watching a 25-year-old woman impersonating a 13-year-old girl.
First of all, the get-up. Her black devil-horned hoodie might be de rigueur in middle school but it wasn't even passably cute on Lavigne. Second of all, becoming famous at a young age certainly did wonders for her grasp -- or rather apparent lack thereof -- of the English language. More time studying Language Arts and less time memorizing her Prozac-laced lyrics would have been optimal. And third: Weird Al Yankovic was on to something a few years back when he made that mock interview with Avril Lavigne in which he made her look like a vapid, awkward, conversationally-challenged little girl (which is what she was then -- but that was, what, eight years ago?).
There is a reason why there was a Google search for "How old is Avril Lavigne?" after American Idol ended. It is more than likely there were quite a few surprised that she is closer to 30 years of age than she is to 10.
She even went after father-of-three and worship pastor, Jim Ranger, who pulled off a sort of Edwin McCain-like vibe with his original song, "Drive." As American Idol host Ryan Seacrest pointed out to Ranger's family outside the audition room, it has always been difficult to impress the judges with an original tune. But that didn't seem to matter to Lavigne, who must have let the devil-horned hoodie go to her head. She got stuck on the pastor's commitments, his children, not seeing how he could make a go of a life on the road.
But she liked his voice.
During the judges' decision, Lavigne was a lone 'no' vote.
Jim Ranger came on American Idol in search of something more for himself and his family, not unlike many of the American Idol hopefuls (one is reminded of Chris Daughtry, Fantasia Barino, and others). Avril Lavigne does not know what he can handle as far as commitment goes and making a judgment call on his current familial and religious obligations makes no sense in a glorified talent competition. Besides, Hollywood is less than a hundred miles from Bakersfield (Ranger's hometown), so there's not much of a hardship at this phase. What could it hurt to send him through to Hollywood? Was Jim Ranger good enough to make it to Hollywood: Yes or no? His voice got him a 'yes,' as it should have. Nothing else mattered.
So... just how old is Avril Lavigne, sage rock and roll veteran that she is? Playing devil's advocate against a worship pastor and his three little kids when it was totally unnecessary shows that "complicated" still isn't quite her thing...
Someone please remind the world how and why Avril Lavigne became famous. Oh, that's right. No one can without incriminating themselves with those nauseatingly infantile songs they helped make into hits...
******
As an aside, please enjoy Weird Al Yankovic's parody of Avril Lavigne's "Complicated" -- "Constipated." It might explain a few things...
