Use These Job Hunting Tips to Get Maximum Benefit from Job Fairs
One of the best ways to get the most out of a job fair is to have a specific strategy... and (1) be prepared (2) arrive early and (3) have a targeted list of employers to see. Here are some proven job hunting tips to maximize your time at job fairs.
The following tips will help you make the most out of any job fair you are fortunate enough to attend:
1) Contact the sponsoring organization for a list of those attending the job fair
2) Research the companies you're most interested in. Visit the company's website if they have one
3) Be sure to have plenty of current resumes with you. If you're applying for several positions, bring enough resumes for each position. Use a portfolio to carry resumes as it presents a more professional image
4) Practice your introduction. First impressions are important. Keep your introduction to under a minute. Tell them your name, work experience, and education in the way you would normally do it. If you would feel more comfortable, practice your introduction before you arrive
5) Make a list of the top three employers you would like to visit and see them first. Be purposeful in who you speak with. Make another list of employers you would like to see after you've seen your top three
6) Get plenty of rest the night before so you're rested when you arrive
7) Dress for success. Dress professionally but comfortably. Wear your most comfortable shoes since you'll be standing in line or on your feet all day
8) Arrive early. The earlier you get into the job fair, the quicker you'll be able to talk with the companies you're interested in
9) Have a specific strategy. Visit the booths that you're most interested in early in the day so you'll be at your best
10) When you greet a potential employer, greet them with a smile and a firm handshake. Be polite and make eye contact when you introduce yourself
11) Thank each recruiter for their time
12) Pay attention to the recruiter's name and get a business card from each one. If possible, take time to jot down notes from your time with them
13) After the job fair, follow up with each recruiter you personally spoke with by sending a Thank You letter, doing so within three days
14) Enclose another resume with your thank you letter. This may help the recruiter remember you and draw attention to your name as a possible employee.
Job Fairs can be an effective tool when you're looking for a job. If you're currently employed, they can still be a good bet to attend. Follow the same information as above, but realize you may only be able to go while you're on your lunch break so you'll want to be even more targeted in who you choose to speak with.
When you go to the Job Fair, make sure you're prepared. Arrive early and have a targeted list of employers to see. Make the most of the time you have and best of luck!
