Wildflower Hunting in New York
Three trails hikers can visit to find spring wildflowers outside of New York City.
The cold has subsided and spring blooms are ready to burst. After a few days of warm weather, March and April sprouts are coloring the landscape of the Hudson Valley. Here's a list of three trails to hunt for wildflowers. The list is organized from the closest to the center of Manhattan to the farthest.
Richard H. Torrey, Long Path trail at Harriman State Park
Near Harriman, NY
This is a rest area with a trail entry. I find this part of the Long Path trail easily accessible to cars. It is directly off of Route 6 traveling north. The trail entrance is right on the parking lot. Hikers can take a quick stroll or an inclined hike where there will be majestic views and patches of untouched wildflowers, such as Purple Trillium.
Arden Valley Road, Harriman State Park
Near Tuxedo, NY
This is also an easily approachable trail. Harriman Train Station is only about ¼ mile from the Arden Valley Road. The parking lot is shortly after the bridge over Route 87. The road past the first parking lot has been closed, but can still be hiked to. The Appalachian Trail runs through this part of Harriman State Park. This low-lying area has fields of tall flowering reeds surrounding several bird feeders. On the trail there are creeks with Skunk Cabbage and Bloodroot.
Gonzaga Park
Near Woodbury, NY
Right from the parking lot flowering shrubs are visible. A quick walk will lead to some beautiful stone structures with fields of Common Blue Violets and Blue-Eyed Grass. Hikers can enter the Long Path trail from this park even though part of the road is temporarily closed to cars. The passage trail is very steep and rocky. Once on the trail, hikers will be rewarded with beautiful views and higher elevation wildflowers like Pink Lady's Slipper, Jack-In-The-Pulpit and Bloodroot. While some wildflowers are abundant, the Pink Lady's Slipper is endangered and should not be picked.
Wildflowers are plentiful in New York. In the Hudson Valley nature can be observed with serenity. Insect repellent is a must and it's best to hike with a buddy. I hike throughout the year. My focus is usually on the destination. Looking for wildflowers demands a calmer focus. It is a hunt for what is at the hiker's feet and easily missed if in a hurry.
