As a student in between semesters, I thought I would do as most do and simply find a job in the mean time. I assumed this would be a relatively easy process and that I would have a job in no time. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I have not been in the workforce for nearly five years. I stayed home with my children, until deciding to go back to school, and have now discovered that the whole process of finding employment has changed drastically.
I am now introduced to an impersonal world of online applications filled with questionnaires and not much, if any, personal contact. Many of the questions require basic answers and give you no opportunity to elaborate. For example, most have a question about retail experience. Well, I do not have any retail experience, but I was a teacher and dealt with the public on a daily basis. I cannot explain this to the computer, however, so I'm sure this looks bad to a store that is looking for a sales associate.
I also have a college degree. Oddly enough this seems to make me overqualified for a part-time job. Most places feel I will expect a higher salary because of this. That is not the case. I simply want a part-time job to make a little extra money between semesters at school. I'm not expecting to become exceedingly wealthy. I will not demand a raise and benefits. I am not trying to come and take your management job from you and if you will just give me the time of day with an actual interview, I could explain this to you. Instead I get automated responses sent to my e-mail informing me that "regretfully, we have chosen to look at other candidates at this time."
I am frustrated and dismayed. I want to scream out that I am a responsible and dependable person. I will be at work on time and do my job without complaint. I am intelligent, a straight "A" student, which means I am diligent in what I do. Hire me! Unfortunately, my cries of frustration can only be heard in my head. After all, the computer does not care how I feel or what my qualifications are.
Then, of course, is the matter of my time schedule. As I stated before, I have small children. My husband works nights and has to be at work before 5 pm. I am starting to discover that if you have any time constraints whatsoever, you are not flexible enough. Well, there's one solution. Sorry honey, you'll have to quit your job so that I can work part-time between semesters. My times of availability do not coincide with the time schedules of ANY job that I have applied for, even though they ask you what times can you work. Just another question on the questionnaire to make you think you have a chance. This company might actually work with you, understanding that you are dependable and will actually show up and work the hours you have designated. Nope...wrong again.
Now what? I only have a limited amount of time before school starts again. That time is steadily ticking away. I don't have the time to spend an hour filling out an application online to then have to wait a week or two before getting "The E-mail." I miss the old days of going in person, filling out a resume, making eye contact with someone and shaking their hand. They remember you that way, and then actually tell you when they'll get back to you. Even if you go to a lot of places nowadays, they simply tell you that all applications are done online. You do sometimes have the option, however, to use a kiosk in the story or to fill out the application at home on your own computer. Thanks.
The convenience of not having to drive all over town is a plus, but unfortunately convenience has replaced courtesy. For now, I will continue to look online and fill out the questionnaires. And then...I'll just wait.
