Before You Buy a Firearm
Every day hundreds of thousands of people enjoy recreational and competition shooting, hundreds more take their families hunting while at the other end of the spectrum police and law enforcement personnel are taught how to save lives.
Browsing through your local gun shop or Internet gun site it's possible to see literally hundreds of firearms and countless accessories. Before you get taken in, or frightened, by all the gleaming steel and plastic lets take a look at the principal considerations when looking to purchase a firearm.
* What do you need it for?
Recreational shooting, that is to say shooting at targets, is a great activity to build hand-eye coordination, marksmanship, and learn the basics of handling a firearm while promoting self confidence.
Hunting is an activity that people who enjoy the outdoors can fall into easily, while it takes quite a bit of patience compared to target shooting the reward can be a very tasty meal that is free of industrial hormones and other nasty stuff.
Competition shooting is a very intense and physically demanding activity that is sometimes put on by local gun clubs where members can display their ability to hit targets, execute drills, and test their reflexes.
Self Defense. The ugly truth about life is that not everyone is nice. When other options have failed a firearm may be the last resort. Choosing the right firearm can literally mean the difference between life and death for you or your family.
After you've decided what you want your firearm for, some other considerations should be looked over before you pick up the nearest thing that happens to look 'cool'.
* Where will you be using your firearm?
This is a particular concern for hunters and those interested in self defense. The environment your gun will be in is going to dictate exactly what kind of gun you need. Do you live in a particularly cold area? Will you be using your new firearm for home defense or will it be on you at all times? What about range? Do you need to hit something from a long distance or will that be an issue?
* Can you afford it?
The ammunition for your weapon will vary by type and 'specialty' whether it's meant for stopping power or for target practice. Again, what you want your gun for will play just as large a role in your selection of ammunition as will your budget. A typical rule of thumb is that larger calibers or those designed especially for a certain purpose (such as stopping power) will cost more than 'standard' types of ammunition.
In addition to the ammunition, maintenance can add up over time. Selecting the proper tools for your firearm is essential when you consider the cost of replacing part of the weapon. In colder climates a thicker lubricating oil is required, it might have to be ordered online depending on local availability Your firearm may or may not include a basic cleaning kit that will have some of the necessities to keep it clean and operable however if it doesn't (and even if it does) a solid cleaning kit will be a very wise investment.
* What's practical for your area?
An important consideration is the area that you live in. Do you live in a tightly packed urban area, an open suburb or maybe in the country? Your choice of firearms is going to be determined largely by what will work in your area. Just because you can afford that Barret .50 caliber sniper rifle doesn't mean that you should use it for home defense.
*Special considerations for home defense
Of the hundreds of home invasion robberies that occur every year some are thwarted by the home owner who has a firearm. However when looking at firearms for home defense a common problem arises; how much is too much?
Preventing over penetration (When the bullet goes through the wall and into another part of the building) is a top priority for anyone who has a family, however weapons that could very quickly bring an assailant down (such as a shotgun) suffer from problems like being too long to effectively maneuver around corners and through tight hallways without special training. Shorter barrels can be purchased for use with these weapons however local laws will need to be checked as some of these after market parts can be illegal in your area.
* Special considerations for self defense
As with anything, good practice brings perfection. If you put the money down for a gun and toss it in your backpack or holster and only bring it out when you absolutely need it. How can you effectively stop your assailant before he overpowers you or causes you harm? Take it to the range, take some self defense classes that incorporate firearm techniques (such as those that use plastic weapon look alikes) so you can get used to drawing and using your weapon quickly and under stress.
* How you handle your firearm
The most important thing when considering a firearm is how it fits you. Is it so large that you might not be able to handle it when shooting? Too small? Could you see yourself firing sustained patterns for several minutes or more if needed?
Ideally you'll have the chance to take the weapon you're considering out to the range for some target practice. This will give you a chance to familiarize yourself with the weapon, how it works and if you can handle it under long periods of firing. Theres no shame in saying 'I can't handle this' if it means saving yourself from injury or possibly being killed.
*Accessioning
First and foremost, even if your gun comes with a basic cleaning kit your first accessory should be a solid cleaning kit (or if they don't have one there you can always assemble one.) Followed by a child safety lock if your gun will be sitting in the open for extended periods of time.
A typical cleaning kit consists of a nylon (important!) bore brush, some copper cleaning brushes, bore pads/swabs (small cloth squares), a bore 'snake' (or rod) used to pull the swab through the bore and clean out loose carbon. Additionally, a bottle of lubricating oil (not WD-40) and a rag.
A solid case (whether cloth or metal, resin or plastic) is a great way to protect your investment from dust and moisture in the air. A good case will have places for you to put your magazines (if your weapon is magazine fed), a cleaning kit, and possibly other types of accessories. I highly recommend keeping your ammunition separate from your weapon to protect little hands (or keep dangerous ones from causing trouble).
Depending on the purpose of your firearm, a solid light is always a great addition, especially if you intend on using your gun at night (for hunting particularly). There are many good LED lights out there, you don't need something more than a pocket light for basic field maintenance but if you're aiming for self/home defense a solid high power light like one of SureFire's tactical lights is highly recommended.
It might be expensive to put down another hundred plus dollars for a light but when you put a retina searing 250 lumens in an attacker's face, it can be easily justified as you're given time to react.
*Using your firearm
The first thing after opening up the case is to read, re-read and commit to memory the entire user's manual. . . Okay, maybe an overstatement but throughly read the manual and pay special attention to the safety procedures. The manufacturer will likely have a list of recommended ammunition (or 'loads') that can be used with your new firearm. Using more powerful loads can damage the weapon and possibly lead to injury, be careful and mindful of what you feed your weapon. It will last for many years when properly maintained and used.
Your local gun dealer will be knowledgeable in the firearms he carries and likely the area you live in, don't be afraid to ask questions. Gun clubs, the NRA and others, can be great stepping stones on the path to responsible gun ownership. If these aren't an option, there are a plethora of Internet sites with reviews and tips for new gun owners.
