Short Story Review: Legal Rites by Isaac Asimov and Fred Pohl
One of Isaac Asimov's few collaborations and with another master of science fiction Fred Pohl this is ghost story set in a courtroom
One of the genres that Isaac Asimov tried a fair amount and was never all that successful with was Fantasy. The truth is that the fantasy he wrote was often good but he focused far more on the details, as you would in a science fiction story of that era, than other aspects and because of that they often felt like science fiction stories with very strange elements. Legal Rites on the other hand is one of the few fantasy stories written by Asimov that really feels like fantasy, although in many ways it is more satire than either science fiction or fantasy.
The idea of this story is of course absurd. The idea of a ghost being able to sue in court at all is silly even if you assume the existence of ghosts but it is taken seriously at least on the surface with everyone taking it very serious.
The story begins with a man who has inherited his money showing up in a small out of the way town. He goes to the house where he sees a ghost which appears to be blood dripping from his neck. It seems that in this universe ghost are created by people dying in violent ways. He is scared and so rushes into town where he is given the means to exercise the ghost.
He begins the process but the ghost gets a lawyer and gives a cease and desist letter. The bulk of the story takes place in court as the young man's lawyer tries to prove that the ghost has no legal claim but with each step fails to do so.
Ultimately this is a highly forgettable story in which you really have to suspend disbelief in order to enjoy it but if you are able to do that and want to see how Isaac Asimov deals with fantasy, or are a fan of both Asimov and Pohl then this is something worth reading.
