Scientists Pinpoint Origins of Noah's Ark Story and the Change in European Culture to Farming
Scientists from the Universities of Exeter, UK, Wollongong, and Australia believe they have found the source behind the Noah's Ark myth and the reason why European culture drastically changed from hunting and gathering to farming in 8500 BC.
The researchers have assessed that the melting of the North American ice sheet, called the Laurentide Ice Sheet had a dramatic effect on global sea level 8,000 years ago and created a huge cultural shift. When the Laurentide Ice Sheet melted it raised global sea levels to as much of an increase as 1.4 meters, it changed the flow of the jet stream which would have flown from the Pacific Ocean through Montana and Minnesota to the south, it also created a huge influx of fresh water into the Atlantic Ocean via the Susquehanna River and the Saint Lawrence. The fresh water influx was the largest of the past 100,000 years and flooded the Black Sea.
Prior to the melting of the Laurence Ice Sheet, the Black Sea was dammed from the influx of the Mediterranean by a ridge across the Bosporus Strait. The dam kept the Mediterranean's salt water out and kept the Black Sea as a fresh water lake. The risen sea levels crossed over the Bosporus Strait into the Black Sea and flooded it.
The researchers believe that the event of the flooding of the Black Sea has been recaptured in all the various folk myths that led to the Noah's Ark story in the Bible. What they also found is that the flooding is the link between the switch from the Mesolithic hunter-gatherer era in Europe to the Neolithic era of farming and making pottery. Archeologists had previously been unsure as to why the rising sea levels had led to such a drastic change.
The researchers created model reconstructions of the Mediterranean and Black Sea shore lines as they were before the sea levels rose. The researchers were able to estimate that almost as much as 73,000 square km of land had been lost once the sea levels began to rise and in as short a time period as 34 years. The researchers have concluded, based on what they know about historical population levels, that the rising sea levels had displaced 145,000 people.
We already know from previous archaeological research that communities in southeast Europe were already using farming techniques and creating pottery at a time before the flood. The rising sea levels forced the people to move west and introduce their farming culture to the hunting and gathering culture communities.
The research was led by Chris Turney, professor at the University of Exeter who argues, that the people of southeast Europe "must have felt that the whole world had flooded." People had to migrate by the thousands taking with them their farming techniques. It was a revolutionary time period and must be the origin of the Noah's Ark story.
Turney also argues that the results of their research generate more concern for today's changing climate. Estimates show that by the upcoming year AD 2050, the rising sea levels will have displaced millions of people each year.
