Scouting the Land

Scout the land you will be hunting. You need to know if bucks are hanging around the land you are hunting. Look for tracks, rubs, deer droppings, scraps and trails that deer frequently travel pass. You will spot these things easily in the woods. If you see any signs, you are in the right area for killing a whitetail deer.

The track size you find determines the size and whether it's a buck or doe. A doe track will be smaller while a buck will be larger. The best place to find trophy bucks is in thick cover; this is their favorite territory to hang out.

Scraps and rubs made on twigs or branches are a sure fire sign a whitetail buck is in the area. How big the scrape or rub is determines the size of the buck. Small whitetail deer do not have antlers big enough to scrape a large tree. If the scrape is big, you got yourself a winning trophy buck.

Stand Setup and Placement

The type of deer stand used is up to the hunter. Typically, deer hunters use a climbing stand but you can use a stationary deer stand.

Climbing stands are portable and moved easily from place to place. It allows the hunter to climb higher in the trees for better view of deer. The higher the stand the less likely the deer are to detect the hunter. Don't disturb the land or plant feed for the deer. The deer know when something is not as it should be, so leave it alone.

Cover your scent as much as possible. Clothing such as carbon fiber hides human scent extremely well. Don't waste money on cover scents to find out they don't work. It's not worth the money plus cost you a trophy buck.

Dedication and Patience

Don't give up if you don't kill a monster buck on the first day of hunting season. Dedication and patience will pay off. Deer move all day and night in the woods, only will dedication and patience will you be the envy of hunters.

Shooting a Trophy Buck

Take a deep breath, stay calm, aim and take that shot. Now you just have to figure out how you will get that trophy buck out of these woods.
