5 Things to Make Sure You Pack in a Backpack
Many people fail to pack these items because they do not think they will need them for "such a short hike" or because they don't want to take up the space with them, but they are items that may really save your life in an emergency.
Compass
First and foremost is a compass. It doesn't matter if the path you are hiking is well signed and all, a compass is always needed. If you ever become disoriented or stray from the path you will be able to find your way in the woods. Whenever someone is lost, a compass is the first thing that is needed to find the way.
Sun block
Again, most of the time this is left out because it was suppose to be a short trip that turned into longer than anticipated or because it was suppose to be overcast and it turned out to be sunny. Either way, sun block is much needed most of the time. If you ever get lost in the woods and it turns into a multi day event this will help stave off a burn.
Bottled Water
Just the one that is in your hand to carry throughout the hike isn't enough; carry at least a liter of water in your pack. Again, when you are lost in the woods you'll be very thankful that you put in the water as a back up. This will weigh down your pack and therefore it is usually one of the first things that aren't packed because of the weight, but you'll be happy you did if/when you need it.
Bug Spray
Like the sun block, it doesn't matter if you were freshly sprayed when you left if you get into trouble and an hour turns into days. Bug Spray can be reapplied as needed if you carry it with you, and therefore help you fend off bites that could become infected.
Lighters
Preferably more than one, but at least one lighter. Matches can get wet or ruined and a lighter is better in the long run. Lighters will help you make a fire to heat food with, to keep warm if it is cold, or to light a fire to signal for help. Lighters are very helpful as a safety backup. Don't ever forget this, as it takes up nearly no space and doesn't weigh a thing.
