Apartment Hunting Tips
Tips on how to find the right apartment. Then article gives tips on how to look and when and where to look also.
To find an apartment these are the most common places to look:
WORD OF MOUTH: This is probably the best and easiest. Tell everyone you know that you are looking. You never know who might have a lead on a great place.
RIDE THROUGH NEIGHBORHOODS: If you have a certain area you would like to live in take a day and explore the neighborhood. I suggest going on a week-end when most people are off of work. Bring a pen and pad and head up and down each street. Look for" FOR RENT" signs.
ON-LINE AND NEWSPAPERS: These are probably the first places most people look. You can go through each ad and find the ones you can afford. The Sunday paper is the best one to look at it has quite a few more ads then the daily paper. Look on Craigslist, it is a free website and allot of people advertise there.
NEIGHBORHOOD BULLETIN BOARDS: Check local stores, coffee shops, bookstores etc. Allot of these often have bulletin boards where people can post their ads. You can also post an add up there saying that you are looking for an apartment.
UNIVERSITY HOUSING LISTING: Even if you are not a student, they can be a great source for finding apartments.
Take a trip to your local campus and browse the many ads you will probably find. Allot of people renting apartments do advertise there. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't mind a non-student renting from them as long as your willing to pay them.
BROKERS: This is a great idea if you really don't have allot of time. They do all the legwork. You just tell them your price-range and basic areas that you want to live. The down-fall is that, they will charge a fee to do this.
Once you have found a apartment you can afford and like it. It is wise to do a few things before signing the lease. Look it over very carefully, make sure all the doors and windows close and lock. Check it out just as if you were buying it. Make a list of questions to ask the landlord. Check with your local police department to see if it is a high crime neighborhood. Most leases are six months to a year, so make sure you check out everything.
