10 Tips for Using Decoys for Turkey Hunting
Here are a few tips that I have picked up to improve your turkey hunting success by using turkey decoys properly.
Remember to place your decoys fairly close to you. By placing your turkey decoy at about 20 yards you are putting yourself close enough to the gobbler for an ethical shot even if he won't call all the way to a decoy.
Another tip to get the gobbler in close enough for a shot is to partially obscure the decoy.
With motion the decoy can be spotted through brush, but the gobbler will have to come in close for a better look. While turkeys will often come all the way up to a motionless decoy, one that moves is much more realistic. You can rig your decoy to move in the wind or simply run a drab color string to the decoy post for you to pull on to add motion.
Another tip regarding decoy presentation is to face the decoy toward a good shooting lane. I've seen them approach from all sides, but many state that gobblers prefer to approach a hen from the front (possibly to strut for the hen).
If you are hunting a new area blindly, decoys can significantly increase your chances. Place a decoy in a field edge or opening in the woods and call.
If you have a small area to hunt build a blind near an opening. Place four or more decoys around your blind in obvious locations and call. Gobblers might hear and / or spot your decoys and come in for a look.
If you are consistently spotting a gobbler in a field or other opening, use a decoy to stop him at the edge of the cover for a shot.
A breeding pair of hen and jake decoys can be a deadly presentation. A breeding hen is created by placing the hen decoy directly on the ground and the jake standing behind her. At times a gobbler will coming running to this display.
Remember that decoys can't make up for bad hunting. Learn to call, camouflage yourself and your gun well, and most important be ready to make the shot when it presents itself.
In the off season your turkey decoy can be laid on its side and flopped around as a predator decoy. Be ready to shoot as you don't want a coyote to ruin your decoy!
