Netflix Releases New Netflix Original Series: Hemlock Grove

Netflix original series Hemlock Grove is the newest addition to the streaming Netflix Instant database. If you are a fan of paranormal television shows, you have to check out this series!

With so many websites popping up that offer streaming television and movies (like Hulu Plus, Redbox, and Blockbuster), Netflix has began to think outside the box to have an edge over their competitors. With so many other companies offering the same televisions shows and movies they do, Netflix has began creating their own shows that no other site has available to their customers. On April 19th Netflix released Hemlock Grove, a new Netflix original show. This is not Netflix's first made-for-Netflix show, they also have House of Cards available in their instant database.

Hemlock Grove appeals to the paranormal audiences. Hemlock Grove is a small dreary, rainy town that looks a lot like the town in the Twilight saga, Forks, Washington. There are gypsies, small-town royalty, affairs, a dead head-cheerleader, and secrets that have been kept for decades. Basically, the creators of Hemlock Grove took a successful aspect of every paranormal television show and movie that has been created in the last five years and combined them all to make one bloody, addictive, and dramatic masterpiece.

In the first episode of Netflix's new show Hemlock Grove, "Jellyfish In The Sky," multiple characters were introduced. The Godfrey family consists of siblings Roman and Shelley Godfrey and their mother Olivia, it was revealed at the end of the episode that their mother killed their father when they were both young children. Roman (Bill Skarsgard) is a troubled teenage boy with a fetish for kinky sex with prostitutes and enjoys spending too much quality time with his female cousin (Penelope Mitchell). His sister Shelley (Nicole Boivin) may not be completely human, she is one eye short of a complete face, bald, and nearly seven feet tall. As unique as the Godfrey siblings are, their mother is just as strange and mysterious. Before her husband's tragic death, it was revealed he suspected her of not being a human being (he thought she was some sort of creature) and sleeping with his brother, Norman Godfrey. Norman is still alive and well, co-manages the family enterprise with Olivia, and is the father of Letha (the pretty blond cousin Roman adores).

The Godfreys aren't the only bizarre family in Hemlock Grove. Lynda Rumancek (Lili Taylor) and her teenage son Peter, move into an old abandoned trailer in a heavily wooded area in Hemlock Grove. The pair appears to be gypsies, with extremely superstitious beliefs, and a very relaxed mother and son relationship. While Peter befriends oddball Roman, his mother has a different opinion of the Godfreys, and doesn't seem to be a fan of them.

Time will tell whether or not Netflix's series Hemlock Grove meets the paranormal fans' expectations. The series has been available for almost twenty-four hours and is already receiving mixed reviews. One fan stated, "This is darker, deeper, and more intellectual than the usual supernatural series. Amazing development, and very artistic." While another reviewer wasn't nearly impressed and stated, "Truly a disappointment! Storyline drags. This is not at all within the same quality as what Netflix provided with "House of Cards". Don't waste your time with this series." If you subscribe to Netflix Instant, you can check out Hemlock Grove yourself and see what all the buzz is about.
