Five Surprising Ways to Immediately Save Money when You Quit or Lose Your Job
Did you lose or quit your job recently and need ways to save money while job hunting? Here are a few tips to help you stretch your dollars and maybe save your sanity.
Financial times are tough with a regular income, and when you lose that income for some reason, it can be monetarily devastating. I recently quit my job to pursue my own interests, and needed to find immediate ways to cut costs on my basic expenses. I have financially planned my exit for over a year, but many folks are not as fortunate, and finding themselves suddenly laid off or fired leaves them struggling.
The Columbus Dispatch wrote last week that 40% of Ohioans do not have savings to cover even the most basic expenses should they lose their jobs. Unfortunately, the rest of the country is not faring much better. In emergency situations like these, the need to cut costs skyrockets. Here are a few tips I have used, beyond the normal cut-all-luxuries advice, that may help should you find yourself in this position.
1. Call Your Cable, Internet, and Phone Provider
If you will end up searching for a new job then you will need to make sure to have access to the internet. My new business requires access at all times, so internet is a necessity for me. Examine your plan and carriers, and call them immediately. With the NPR reporting that 119,000 customers dropped their cable or satellite service in a recent quarter, your provider will more than likely be extremely happy to help so that you will stay.
I have a bundle, where my cable and internet are together, for one price. My particular company was willing, on the spot, to cut my bill by $42 a month for the next twelve months. That is a $502 savings in one phone call.
2. Turn Your Thermostat Up or Down
If it is summer, turn your thermostat up a few degrees. If it is winter, turn it down. The local electric company where I live urges these changes on its website. You may see savings of 2-3% for each degree up or down. For me, five degrees is not noticeable, and will save me about $18 on my next bill.
3. Visit Your Doctor
Depending on your health benefits, you may be out of insurance soon. I will be able to add myself to my husband's policy, but some may not have that option. In a recent article, national insurance provider Aetna, stressed the importance of finding out when your coverage will end. It may even be at the end of the current month. If you will have a lapse, it may be time to get in to see your doctor.
Get a physical and any necessary prescriptions refilled. Check with your pharmacy. Walgreens offers a mail order prescription service where you can order 90 days of maintenance medications, sometimes for only two co-pays.
4. Portion Your Food
Determine how much food you should really be eating and adapt. This may seem harsh, but USA TODAY reported last quarter that 2/3 of Americans are overweight or obese. I recently wrote an article, here, on how portioning my food now saves me over $3478 a year in food costs, due to less overall consumption and waste. This is a change you can make immediately.
A stressful, downtime like this in your life may be a great time to get healthier. The Centers for Disease Control lists a healthy diet as one of the top ways to reduce stress. Many references are available to help with correct portioning, but I have found the zone diet information, here, to be most helpful and easy to understand.
Utilizing these techniques has helped me not only save money, but also lose 31 pounds and seven inches off my waist in four months. Try that on for size. Can you see being able to walk confidently into a new job interview as a benefit?
5. Barter
Do you make anything or have particular expertise others may need? Bloomberg Businessweek touts bartering as a currency on the rise. As a hobby, I make all natural soaps. I realized that the family business where I buy much of my produce and farm fresh eggs might like my soap, so I proposed a trade. I now get food and they get soap. This is a large savings for me as the raw materials I use to make my soaps are less expensive than food. Maybe you could cook meals for someone who could do your taxes, or hem some pants for a neighbor who could babysit?
I hope that some or all of these tips will allow you to hold on to more of your money, diffuse a little stress, and find a new job in the shortest amount of time possible. You may even find that you want to continue your savings even after you get back to work.
