Charles Island Milford Connecticut for Treasure and Ghost Hunting
Charles Island in Milford Connecticut has a long history of pirate buried treasure and haunting. It is accessible by foot during low tide. It is a mysterious and eerie island that is desolate with many failed attempts at habitation.
In 1699, Captain William Kidd, visited Milford while on route from New York to Boston. Legion has this famous pirate burying his iron treasure chests full of gold and gems on Charles Island. He was told that he was to be pardoned by the East India Company on charges of piracy and murder. Misled by this information, Captain Kidd was hung for these offenses in London.
Captain Kidd put a curse on his buried treasure which simply stated harm would come to anyone who tried to dig it up before he could return to claim it. The Island has had many an amateur treasure hunter try their luck at finding the treasure to no avail. This 14 acre island has many unearthed places left to explore for this legionary fortune of Captain Kidds'.
The Island itself is somewhat of a mystery. Surrounded by water on all sides, you can still walk out to it each day during a six hour window of time. A sandbar makes a perfect pathway to the island at low tide. It is during this time when you see many people set out by foot to explore this enchanted and somewhat eerie piece of land. It is accessible from Silver Sands State Park whose waters magically part offering this walk way to any explorer.
There have been many attempts to inhabit this island, none however lasted very long. The ruins on the island of long forgotten structures built to house a hotel resort and monastery are all that is left of habitat evidence. A tobacco plantation and a fertilizer plant are a few more of the attempts that failed in inhabiting the island.
Although Captain Kidd's curse is by far the most famous from the legions of this island, there have been other stories of curses handed down through Milford history. The very first curse was made by a Paugussett Indian chief whose daughter was kidnapped. He cursed anyone who tried to inhabit the island. In 1721 five sailors found hidden treasure in a cave in Mexico. The treasure belonged to the Mexican ruler at the time, Guatmozin. The sailors sailed with the treasure to Milford, where four of the men met with a horrible death. The remaining sailor hid the treasure in the cellar of the Milford Inn where it was eventually discovered by a patron. He took the treasure in a rowboat out to Charles Island and buried it there. His curse was similar to Captain Kidd's in preventing attempts of future discovery of the treasure.
The Island is also haunted according to local legion. Strange lights, screams, moans, and voices have all been reported by explorers of this small island. Many have camped on the island overnight reporting strange voices and full body apparitions of people dressed in garb from a long gone era. Strange lights have been seen over the island at night. There have been many stories about people walking out to the island and becoming stuck out there due to the sandbar being covered over. Having to spend the night on Charles Island is spooky with the reports of ghosts from centuries gone by.
Charles Island has a horrific undertow when the sandbar becomes covered. It is very dangerous to try to make your way back on foot once the water washes over the sand bar even a few inches. It is very important to only use the sandbar during dead low tide and once on the island be mindful of how much time you have. It is a desolate island with still nothing at all on it except the ruins of decades gone by. They are overgrown and hard to find. It is an island of many mysteries, legions, and folk lore.
