My Experiences Job Hunting
I hope this article will help someone who is job hunting right now and prepare them for some of the problems they may face.
Many of these staffing agencies have access to a variety of types of jobs ranging from factory work to office work and even jobs such as working various set-up or clean-up jobs for coming attractions such as concerts, rodeos, monster truck shows, and even working as parking directors for such events, should you have a concert hall or sports arena in your town. These types of jobs usually will pay minimum wage and are very temporary. It is not often that a person will be hired by the place they are sent to by these agencies and more often than not, you may find yourself working at a factory as a temp for months just to end up being let go by that company and simply being replaced by other temporary workers. It is quite possible to work at a factory through a temp agency for 6 months, have an excellent job performance rating, and even earn a 30-day pay raise for your performance just to be let go at the end of your assignment and simply replaced by another temp worker. It can be a very frustrating experience.
The biggest problem that comes from using a temporary agency is that many of the best paying factory jobs use people EXCLUSIVELY sent to them by the staffing agency, therefore, your chances of being hired by the highest paying companies are low without going through the agencies, and then, slim to none, when you do go through them, so, it has been my experience that temp agencies are not a way to find a permanent job
Most of the jobs that accept applications and actually interview for jobs are either small companies or franchises of large companies that have branches or small local businesses. These jobs tend to pay smaller wages and offer fewer benefits than the larger ones. The good thing about them is, however, that once you get hired, you are hired and are no longer subjected to not knowing for sure that you will have a paycheck each week or two weeks or whatever their pay cycle might be for that job. Also, your chances for advancement and pay raises are more likely if you are a hired worker rather than a temp sent from an agency.
The most recent problem I have found when job searching is that many times now, you simply fill out an application online, and answer a lot of questions online and never talk to a supervisor, manager, or anyone else in person, who hires for the company. Target and Wal-Mart are both companies I have put in applications for and never once talked to a person or was notified in any way concerning my application. I have put in an application three times now at both of the above mentioned places and have heard nothing from either of them as of today.
The latest way to find a job now is called networking, which is simply a fancy way of saying: knowing someone who knows someone who knows someone who needs to hire someone. A very good place to start with this method is with your friends or family. Maybe someone you know works at a great job and knows of a certain position that is open in that company or of someone who is about to leave that job. This may give you an advantage of knowing this information before it becomes public. The main thing is you have to ask anyone and everyone you know to find these types of situations. This may give you a chance to put in an application for that job before it is even posted in the classifieds or known to other applicants.
In closing, I would just like to say that having been through this many times in my life and even now, continuing to look for a better job, the one thing you do not want to do is give up on finding the job you really want and deserve. It may take some time and you may have to work at McDonalds or Burger King until you find something better, or you may discover that you love working at McDonald's or Burger King, but either way, YOU CANNOT GIVE UP! Job hunting is never easy, and sometimes we end up taking jobs that we later wish we had not taken, but each job gives you experience to draw on as you continue to find the right job.
