Rupert Sanders May Direct 'Van Helsing' Reboot
Universal turns to a familiar face to helm another attempt at bringing the famous monster hunter to the screen.
"Van Helsing" was the first announced several months ago with Tom Cruise attached to play the title role. That is apparently still on, as both the director and Universal seem keen on maintaining a working relationship that began with Sanders's feature debut, "Snow White and the Huntsman."
That film brought decent box office returns for Universal, but it also netted Sanders a sizable amount of controversy when he revealed that he and star Kristen Steward had been carrying on an affair. Initially, all signs pointed to Sanders returning for that film's sequel (or spin-off), but this Van Helsing news might be a clue that this project is a higher priority for Universal.
The bigger question might be where it lands on Cruise's list of priorities. He's currently shooting "All You Need is Kill," but he has a handful of projects lined up afterwards, including another "Mission: Impossible" film and the long-rumored "Top Gun" sequel.
Like "The Mummy," Orci and Kurtzman envision this Van Helsing being "grounded in reality," which is to be expected since that phrase seems to be stamped on every Hollywood press release and logline these days.
I'm more curious to see if Universal pulls an "Avengers" with its monsters stable; after all, the studio put together some of the first cinematic crossovers back in the 40s. Not only did Frankenstein's monster meet The Wolf Man, but a couple other "Monster Rally" movies also featured Dracula.
Will history repeat itself for Universal? Given the nature of franchises these days, it's hard to believe someone won't kick the idea around if both "The Mummy" and "Van Helsing" are successful.
