Trapping - Sport or Just Plain Mean
I am an avid animal lover yet I do have friends that believe in hunting. These friends vehemently defend hunting...
Merriam Webster defines hunting as "the act of one that hunts; specifically: the pursuit of game," but how much pursuing is actually going on specifically when it comes to trapping?
I am an avid animal lover yet I do have friends that believe in hunting. These friends vehemently defend hunting, arguing its necessity with the over population of some species or the fact that they utilize all aspects of the killed creature thereby justifying the means. Others argue it is the "thrill" of the hunt, the skill of searching for the beast and killing it via bow and arrow or shotgun. While I personally don't agree with the "sport" I will say this: these methods surely seem more humane than trapping. Where is the sport in that?
In a recent article published by Reuters, hunting wolves has become legal again in some states after the wolves were ridded of Federal protection last year. Trapping these magnificent animals seems to be the weapon of choice for many hunters. One such hunter, going by the name of Matthew Brown, posted the message, "Nice, one down and a BUNCH to go!" in response to a Facebook image of a single wolf choked to death in a snare. While ranchers may see wolves as a threat to their livestock, I somehow doubt Mr. Brown owns anything more than a six pack of beer and a probable banjo, simply enjoying the trapping of innocent creatures for the sake of killing and nothing more.
In a recent visit to Hawaii, the local news ran two different stories in the week we were there, featuring the entrapment of two separate whales caught in fishing nets off different islands. Understanding the need for commercial fisherman and their nets, what I can't understand is why these nets can't be banned during whale season. Humpback whales actually are federally protected and shouldn't we therefore, do everything we can to protect them from entrapment? Let the commercial fisherman fish with lines for the few months whales are in the area.
If hunting is a sport than trapping should be considered its distant cousin at best. There is certainly no skill involved nor is there an overpopulation of the above mentioned creatures. It is simply a barbaric way to kill.
