Are New GPS Applications an Invasion of Privacy?
A new device being advocated by insurance companies would record how and how often you drive your automobile. Then the companies would adjust your rates accordingly.
I observed that maybe some of this stuff is getting a little out of hand. They already have cell phones that allow your spouse, or whomever, to track your whereabouts whenever you have your cell phone turned on. And more and more cities are installing video cameras at intersections and heavily-used areas to catch red light offenders and criminals. GPS is also being installed in cars in case you break down or have an accident
All this may make you feel safer as you venture out into the world, but at what cost? Has 1984 finally arrived where not only Big Brother, but the guy who lives down the street is watching you? By the way, if you want to spy on your neighbor, just dial up Google maps and get an aerial view of his house. The more of this stuff that we use, the less and less private our lives become. Is this a new form of exhibitionism? Are we so cut off from our fellow humans that we have to expose ourselves by installing video cameras in our houses and broadcasting all of the intimate details of our lives over the Internet?
And now, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, (www.stltoday.com), insurance companies want to install tracking devices in your car that will allow them to monitor your driving habits. The devices, called "telematics" are becoming a big hit with insurance companies. Safeco insurance already has a device that will allow parents to monitor their teen's driving by sending messages through their cell phones.

The companies advertise that by volunteering to use the device you may eventually be able to lower your rates by as much as 30%. The reverse is also true. If the device determines that you drive recklessly you will get a surcharge on your next bill, even if you don't have an accident.
