Rocking Out that Tacky Holiday Sweater
What is a tacky sweater? How do you find them? Here are some great tips to help you get ready for your own tacky sweater party!
I remember as a young girl, my father thought it would be a wonderful idea to buy everyone in our family matching sweaters. He proudly came home with these horrible red sweaters that were just, well, tacky! In fact, they were so ugly, my mother made him return them to the store the very next day. That story usually comes up when my family discusses clothing disasters.
Most of us have been victims of receiving tacky sweaters in our lifetime. Some more than others! So how do we totally rock out the ugly sweater look? Where do we find these interesting creations? Are Ugly Sweater parties the answer to our prayers? It just might be!
The tacky sweater party
Like I have said, we have all gotten those hideous holiday sweaters! The kind that are so ugly, so embarrassing, your only options are to re-gift as a gag gift, or to burn it. It is from these horrible sweaters, that a new trend was born. The Ugly Sweater Party! This is a gathering that allows a person to proudly show off their unique style of ugly.
What passes as an tacky sweater?
In truth, everyone has their own opinion on what tacky or ugly is. For me, it is bright gaudy color splashes and strange applications; like the cotton ball snowman. Some find these things totally adorable. You can also enhance a sweater to make it even tackier! Add pins with blinking lights on them, apply added bling or decoration. You can accessorize with gaudy jewelry or glitter. Be creative and have fun with it!
Where to find these treasures?
If you haven't been lucky enough to have been gifted with a tacky sweater, there are many places you can go to find them. Your very best bet is the thrift store. They are almost always sure to have them, especially in the spring after the holidays. Consignment shops are another good place to find them. You can always go to any of the run of the mill department stores but really, where's the fun in that? There are many people that make them and sell them online. You can even make one for yourself and your friends if you're creative!
Just have fun with this. It no longer needs to be the gut wrenching, how do I get rid of this, problem that it used to be. Remember, ugly is in the eye of the beholder!
