Jawb Huntin' in a Broken System
Ranting about job hunting right now is shockingly easy. If only it were as simple to land one.
So, you know, while we're #4 "best economic situation for cities U.S.-wide" there's not exactly a dump truck full of graphic design positions. I'm falling back on the old standby of admin assistant, sales, sales support... stuff I haven't done in a while, but I figure (much like riding a biped) how difficult can it be to remember how to use vlookup in Excel, right? I send out my INCREDIBLY. AWESOME. RESUME. which may be the best resume of all time to nigh on a brazillion craigslist ads and... nothing. Not a peep. Not even a 'thanks for your inquiry!' or 'we've received your resume and will get back to you shortly' or 'how's your mother' or 'that's what she said'. NOTHING.Suddenly it dawns on me today. I'm juxtaqualified. If my resume is to be believed, I'm a designer. An artsy type. A 'creative'. Everything that obviously would be mutually exclusive from detail-oriented, uber organized, blah blah blah. Which is, of course, true. I'm neither detail-oriented nor am I uber organized.
But I AM a bad ass, and silly things that like that have never stopped me from being an A Player. On top of that, I've got two projects in the hopper that may land me in Costa Rica in six/seven months or L.A. in less than six. Because I'm not evil, I don't really want to get into a hardcore, difficult-to-replace position and then say "Sayonara" to a company just when I start to become profitable (which, as I understand it, is statistically three months in). I obviously could take something that would allow me to work remotely, but those gigs are difficult to land in lovely-but-behind-the-times Alaska.
So basically I need a basic job with a company that won't be mortally wounded if I'm gone in six months in a town that doesn't have many graphic design/marketing gigs with a resume that is becoming increasingly more difficult to tailor in the 'admin assistant' direction.GAH, I say. GAH.Temp agencies SHOULD be the way to go. But one month later and still no real luck. How much ethical relativism would one need to have at this stage of society's standards to sell their reproductive eggs? And is there good money in that? Or, you know, decent money. Or just... money. On top of that, I have this gut feeling that I should have known better. This is a beginner's mistake. Always tailor your resumes to whatever job for which you're currently applying. Though it's obviously the only almost effective tool a company that posts an ad on craigslist.org is going to acknowledge, something inside of me is so disgusted by that method I'm unconsciously rebelling. Which is why it's taken a month to realize what I would have robotically done in the past.
There are better ways to do this. Top Grading, networking... many alternative hiring strategies have been introduced into the workforce but I have yet to observe a single company institute any of them.Of course, I just might be going to all the wrong places to network. Quite possibly there are amazingly awesome Google-like oasis companies looking for someone exactly like me and I've been paying cover charges to the wrong black-tie events. I know how to market myself and be amazingly irresistible to the right company. But obviously I need to see and be seen, and the places I've chosen thus far haven't been where recruiters for top Alaskan businesses drink their Rob Roys after work.Truth to tell, Imma miss those deep fried cheese sticks at the Long Branch Saloon.
