The Misadventures of Johnny Driver, Chapter 10: Johnny and Ben....And Jerry
Johnny deals with the aftermath of his late night at Wellingtons.
By the time Johnny got home from work that night it was already 10 p.m. He'd already left several messages for Ben and hadn't heard back from him. He knew that Ben was disappointed and it made him even more frustrated. Johnny decided to jump into the shower and head on over to Ben's place and surprise him. He figured he'd make it there by 11, which wasn't too late, especially on a Friday night.
All Johnny could think about during the car ride was being with Ben. Over the past several weeks he'd grown quite fond of him and was hoping their relationship would develop into something special. He stopped at a local supermarket to pick up some roses to go with the gift he'd bought for Ben's birthday, a bottle of his favorite cologne. He made it to Ben's house at ten minutes before eleven.
The lights were on inside and there were two cars in the driveway, Ben's and a Honda he didn't recognize. Johnny wondered whose car it could be as he gathered up the flowers and the gift and headed towards the front door. Suddenly he felt a nervous twinge deep within his stomach and thought twice about ringing the bell before he actually did.
It took Ben a few minutes to come to the door. He wasn't greeted with the usual smile on his face that Johnny had gotten used to whenever they'd first see one another.
"Hey Ben, Happy Birthday!" Johnny handed the roses to the birthday boy.
"Hi Johnny. What are you doing here? It's so late."
"I so wanted to see you on your birthday and besides, didn't I tell you I'd come by once I was done? I tried calling you, but I kept getting your voicemail."
"Look Johnny," he paused with a heavy sigh. "Jerry's here."
Jerry was Ben's ex. They'd broken up about six months before he and Johnny met, and Ben often spoke of Jerry. The breakup had been hard on him.
"Oh, I see. Well I'd better get going. Here, this is for you." Johnny handed the wrapped gift to Ben and headed back towards his car.
"Johnny, wait!"
Johnny stopped at the end of the walkway and turned around. Ben followed him.
"Listen Johnny, I don't think this is going to work. You're so wrapped up in that damned flower shop we never get to see each other. When you cancelled on me before I was so angry and frustrated. I can't deal with a part time relationship anymore. Jerry just happened to call and since I wasn't doing anything..." He didn't have to finish.
Johnny was speechless. Inside he wanted to cry and just jump into his car and drive far away, by himself. Ben put his arm around Johnny's shoulder. "Johnny, I'm sorry. You know it's been really difficult between us from the start. And besides," he paused again.
"I think that maybe Jerry and I might try and work things out. You know I never stopped loving him."
That was all Johnny had to hear. He flung Ben's arm off his shoulder and ran to his car as fast as he could. Ben just stood there with the gift in his hand. Johnny wanted to cry, but the tears wouldn't come. He was exhausted physically and mentally and he hated Wellingtons. He drove off into the night.
