Bargain Hunting for Cheap Deer Rifles

This article pertains to low cost deer rifles and the authors opinion of the said rifles. I have been hunting and shooting for years and have hands on experience with the articles content.

There are numerous places one can look for a bargain deer rifle. Pawnshops, Gun Shows, Classified ads, and the internet have become the most popular venues to finding the perfect starter rifle for the perfect price. Pawnshops pay customers for used rifles that are no longer wanted. Often the shop buys the rifle for half of the value of the gun giving you room to haggle a better price with the store owner. If you play your cards right you can get a top of the line rifle for a middle of the line price. If you look under the classified adds you may be lucky enough to find someone who is selling off a gun collection and is willing to part with a rifle for a great price. Web sites like gunbroker.com offer online shopper's savings and shop at home convenience. Gun shows offer table after table of reasonably priced rifles that are perfect for bagging you buck.

Now that you know places to look for an affordable deer rifle I will get to the main reason that you are reading this article; the guns themselves. Below is a list of rifles that will break the world record for the largest deer without breaking your budget.

The first rifle on this list is the venerable Winchester model 94. This tried and true rifle is the classic American lever action. The Winchester 94 design was introduced in 1894 (hence the name) and was barely been modified until the Winchester Repeating Arms Company closed its doors in 2005. The only major change to the design was the introduction of a cross bolt safety to respond to safety concerns. Chambered in 30-30 Winchester the 94 provides adequate power to humanely kill a deer. The 30-30 cartridge is ideal for short ranges and brushy environments often found in Appalachia and the southern swamp land. With millions of units produced over a century's time it is not hard to find a used model 94 for a reasonable price and satisfy your inner John Wayne in the process.

Savage Arms has been the common mans armory since their opening in 1894 with the model 110 and 111 bolt action rifle continuing the proud tradition. A brand new savage rifle costs, on average, 200 to 300 dollars less than other company's products. If you search around you can find a new savage 110 for 400 dollars or a used rifle for around 300 dollars.

The mantra one shot one kill applies to hunting as well as action movies. The Harrington and Rossington line of single shot rifles embody this concept in an affordable package. This simple break action rifle is virturally idiot proof in its operation and is ideal for someone with no previous firearms experience. Simply open the breech, place a shell, close the breech, pull back the hammer, and pull the trigger. With its simplicity and low cost this rifle is ideal for someone who wants to try hunting on for size with a minimal investment.

What rifle carried the Red Army form Stalingrad to Berlin? The Mosin Nagant did. The Mosin Nagant served the Russian military from 1891 to 1946 as a standard issue and later in specialized applications. With such a long term of military service the rifle design has to be solid. If a rifle is good enough for military service it is good enough to be a deer rifle. Chambered in 7.62x54R the Nagant offers the middle ground between the.308 Winchester and the 30-06 Springfield cartages. With millions of rifles produced the Mosin Nagant is widely available in pawnshops and gun shows for around 100 dollars. Two variants are readily available the long 91/30 and the M44 carbine (pictured) both are solid rifles with the M44 being smaller and quicker to handle (bonus points for using the integrated bayonet.) Though not the most accurate rifles ever made the Mosin Nagant is more than sufficient to take your trophy.

The Mauser design was the standard issue German infantry rifle during both world wars. The Mauser design is also the grandfather of most sporting arms today. After serving life as a battle rifle the Mauser is now ready to retire as your deer rifle. Chambered in 8mm Mauser the k98 (World War Two Standard issue) is capable of taking deer, bear, and moose with a well placed shot. A beater k98 is also available at gun shows for a little over 200 dollars. This solid bolt action and pioneer design is a steal at that price.

For those seeking a fast follow up shot the SKS carbine is the ideal deer rifle. Firing 1- rounds of a 7.62x39 cartridge with energy comparable to 30-30 Winchester the SKS offers plenty of firepower, and with ammo available for as little as 5 dollars for a box of twenty rounds proves to be one of the best values in shooting today. A barely used Yugoslavian SKS can be found at a gun show for roughly 250 dollars. When coupled with the affordability of ammo the SKS is a great buy. Be sure to purchase the sight tool with your SKS and you will almost certainly fill the freezer this fall.

Hunting is a great American pastime enjoyed by many. Though gear helps the overall outcome of the hunt does not rely on who has the best toys. Sadly hunting has become overly technological to the point of losing its appeal to minimalist who want to make the smallest investment possible. Minimalists like you and I are similar to the Pioneers. The pioneers headed west with out state of the art optics or 400 dollar camouflage clothing but managed to survive on game they hunted.. The rifles in this article allow one to avoid technology and experience hunting in its most pure form. Keep in mind the most important part of your hunting gear is something you have had since birth, your brain.
