Wild Turkey Hunting: The Bare Necessities
Basic gear to choose from when going on wild turkey hunting.
Basically, you have to decide how much you plan to tote around on your own and how close you plan to park your vehicle. You have three basic selections to choose from when it comes to packing in the gear on your person - a fanny pack, a backpack or a jacket vest. Here is a brief outline of each:
1. Backpacks - This is a desirable option especially if you want to tote a decoy or two. The pack allows you to hold more gear than a vest or fanny pack plus you can take it off and use it as a back rest when wait time between turkeys runs long.
2. Vests - Turkey hunting vests has all sorts of pockets and straps to hold things. You can easily store your excess ammo in these pockets along with easy snacks and even a water bottle or two. Your turkey hunting calls, pocket knife, turkey tags, bug spray and even a cell phone, GPS or compass.
3. Fanny pack - These are the cheapest and lightest option around. These don't weigh you down and it is easy to access, even with one hand if the other is occupied. These packs are bare bones and best if you know you are close to your vehicle should you need something in an emergency.
While you can carry as little or as much as you want or need, there are a few items that are absolutely necessary. You should always make sure that you have these items on hand: your turkey tag and license to kill, your shotgun and shells (or if you are a bow hunter, your bow and arrows), a turkey call and a compass, map or cell phone. You may also want to carry bug spray to repel biting bugs, toilet paper when you need to heed the call of the wild, gloves and a head mask, water, snacks and a Swiss Army knife or all-in-one tool set.
You can never be too prepared these days! In addition, always make sure that you have a few items in your vehicle nearby in case you end up stuck out there longer than necessary like bottles of water, a sleeping bag or a blanket and a first aid kit.
