Junk Drawer Organizing, Cleaning Out a Junk Drawer
Cluttered junk drawer? A few minutes cleaning can save you hours of hunting around for all those bits that you don't think go anywhere else.
Junk Drawer Organizing
Start by pulling everything out of the drawer. Move the items to a table where you can spread out and make piles. Wipe out the drawer if you need to. Next, start putting like items in piles. Pads of paper, pencils and pens, scissors, and tape can all go in a '˜stationery' pile. Any tools, screws, nails, and picture hanging supplies can get grouped in another pile.
Mystery items can go in a small box. Bring this box out a dinner time and pass it around so people can identify the uses for the objects. Trash, receipts for small purchases made in 2020, bread bag ties, bent paper clips and all of that can go into the trash can. Toss those items that were set in the drawer for some "just in case" moment that has never come.
Now, honestly ask yourself if the items belong in a junk drawer or if the items could be found more easily and with less frustration if they were kept somewhere else.
Become a Junk Drawer Organizer
Stationery items like paper and pencil are better suited to a desktop organizer, something with slots for a few pads of paper and areas for pens, pencils, and scissors. This stuff you usually need in an instant so wouldn't it make more sense to keep it on a countertop or a side table?
All manuals '" for everything from clock radios to barbecue grills should all go into a file box or a desk drawer. Put all light bulbs, even for nightlights, in the same place (not the junk drawer).
Pieces that belong to vacuums or phones that you no longer own should get tossed. If you know that you'll use them; put them in the workshop with other tools and handyperson equipment. Look through the rest of the items you have and question if you'd have an easier time finding them
You'll still have items that don't seem to have a home anywhere else in the house. The junk drawer is the place for magnets, carabineers, a handy screwdriver, tape measure, etc. These are things that you need, just not all the time. Cleaning out a junk drawer is about putting things that already have a place back in place where they can be found. What you are left with is an assortment of miscellaneous items that don't really fit anywhere else along with a few tools that you use frequently enough that you don't want to hunt for them.
