The Javelina is Not Just Another Wild Pig
Its not a Pig!
The Javelina, the official mascoct of Texas A and M University in Kingsville, is related to the hippopotamus'; native to the Southwestern United States, Central America and South America these little animals are often confused with the feral hog or razor back, a domesticated pig brought from the European countries by settlers, that has turned wild. While the Europeon hog, related to the Warthog in Africa, is its closely related relative, they are still a separate species. Javelina evolved on its own into an individual species, on the western continents. While the pig evolved on the European continents. There are many distinct differences between the two and the main way to tell them apart is their tusks. Feral Hogs and grow close to 1000 pounds and their tusks grow long and curl. The Javelina is a small swine with short straight tusks. Fully grown it is about 3 to 4 feet and can weigh up to 80 pounds. These animals eat roots, grasses, and small animals. The name Javelina (pronounced have-a-lean-a) most likely came from a Spanish word for javelin or sword, referring to its straight razor sharp tusks and its quick speed.
Unlike their European counterparts these Javelinas can not be domesticated and a person should not attempt to do so, they have nasty temperaments and have been known to attack humans if provoked. As a warning they will rub their tusks together to make a chattering sound before attacking. For the most part they will ignore humans and run away. Most attacks that occur these days are directed toward hunters while the animal is trying to escape.
A game animal, Javelina are hunted for its meat, although it's widely considered to be rather less than palatable which is why many hunters turn their catch into sausage. The hunting regulations vary from state to state. The most popular states are Texas and Arizona.
