Baker County Florida
Almost half covered by public land, Baker County is a quiet far-out Jacksonville suburb where harried city folk can get lost in the Old Florida wilderness.
This county was founded in 1861. It was named after James McNair Baker, former Florida judge and senator. With a land area of 588 square miles, Macclenny is the Baker County seat. Glen St. Mary is the only other incorporated town. The county's north side borders Georgia.
Still sparsely populated, Baker County serves as a way-out suburb of the Jacksonville metro area.
Parks and recreation
Visitors can stroll through Heritage Park Village in Macclenny, where several mini-museums describe the life and times of early settlers in this North Florida county. Many current residents are related to these early pioneers. Several covered pavilions and a gazebo make for delightful picnics.
At Glen St. Mary, Celebration Park offers a big gazebo surrounded by fountain and shade trees. This is a popular outdoor wedding spot.
The Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park commemorates the biggest battle fought in Florida during the Civil War. It's also Florida's oldest historic site. Reunions and re-enactments are held throughout the year, and visitors can stroll through a mile-long trail that describes highlights of the battle.
Covering over 37,000 square miles in northern Baker County, the John M. Bethea State Forest links with the Osceola National Forest farther south and the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge farther north into Georgia. This creates a long wildlife right-of-way where black bears, bobcats and bald eagles plus many more North Florida critters roam. Within John M. Bethea is a three-mile shoreline along the St.Marys River, where canoeing and fishing is popular.
There are few accommodations in Baker County beyond a few budget chain hotels at Mcclenny, yet there is a lot more at nearby Jacksonville.
Transportation
Interstate highway I-10 runs roughly east west, and so does US highway 90. US90 crosses Macclenny, then takes a slight southwesterly track.
The Jacksonville airport serves Baker County. Greyhound Bus Lines stops at Jacksonville.
