10 Safety Tips for Turkey Hunting
Here are some tips to keep you safe in the turkey hunting woods.
When approached by a hunter, speak and speak loudly. Even the dimmest of folks know that turkeys do not speak. At least I think that they do.
Be certain that nothing on your body is white, blue or red. The whites of your socks, the white collar of your tee shirt, the cuffs of your blue jeans, or a red handkerchief sticking out of your pocket could be all the inducement to shoot that some reject needs.
Keep an eye out for red, white, and blue colors on other items on your person. Diaphragm calls often have white on them.
Carry your turkey decoys in a bag or completely covered in some other manner.
Be careful when hunting over decoys that you are aware of your surroundings. Personally I wouldn't use decoys (one of my favorite ways to hunt) on public or other unfamiliar hunting land).
A turkey hunter sitting with their back to a tree has an additional layer of safety. The tree trunk helps to shield you from unseen hunters approaching your calling from behind.
Be especially careful during periods of poor visibility. A mentally defective hunter is more likely to make a mistake shooting in the rain, fog, or low light conditions.
Don't hunt with idiots. I can't help it he is your brother in law. If someone is your group is not a safe hunter he or she needs to be taught better behavior or one of you needs to get out of the group.
Exercise extreme caution when using a gobble to call. For the most part, gobbling should be limited to location and not for calling.
As with all hunting, you must know your target and what is in front of and behind it. While shotguns have much more limited range than rifles, there is no such thing as being too cautious. No turkey is worth taking a chance in harming someone else.
While turkey season is one of the most dangerous hunting seasons the number show that it is still safer than driving a car or other things that we do everyday. Don't let the safety factor keep you out of the woods, but simply be aware of what you and others around you are doing and have fun.
