5 Things to Consider When Buying a Hunting Rifle
This article discusses five things that you should consider when buying a hunting rifle.
There is an old cliché that says, "Experience is the best teacher." It may be a worn-out statement but it remains valid especially when it comes to buying a hunting rifle. I use to think that buying a hunting rifle would be an easy task. You just go into a gun shop and grab whatever weapon your eye takes a fancy to right? Wrong! I learned that buying a hunting rifle is a lot like buying a pair of blue jeans. Just because it looks good and works for someone else, doesn't necessarily mean that it will work for you. In order for the gun to work right, it has to fit your body type and shooting style. If you buy the wrong one, you could end up where I did once you shoot it. Unceremoniously sitting on your butt in the dirt with a bruised shoulder, a swollen jaw and wounded pride. That experience taught me that there are several things that need to be considered when choosing a hunting rifle. Here are a few of them:
1. Length of Pull
The length of pull is usually measured from the middle of the trigger back to the middle of the butt and the top of heel and the end of the toe. Ideally, when you have the gun mounted to your cheek, your shoulder should come forward to meet the stock. If you select a gun with the wrong length of pull for your body type, it could affect the accuracy of your shooting as well as cause injury to your face when the gun recoils after firing. The butt of the gun could rear back and cause you to hit yourself in face. This is partially why I ended up on the ground nursing my injuries and my pride.
2. Pitch
Pitch is the angle at which the butt of the stock is cut and having the right one is important because it affects how the recoil of the gun is distributed across your shoulder area. It also affects the placement of your pattern. As such, using a gun with a pitch that doesn't suit you could cause you to fall backwards after shooting or cause the gun's butt to rise up and smack you in the jaw. It is sometimes measured by standing the gun on a flat surface and measuring the downward distance between the barrels to the flat surface.
3. Grip Shape
The size and shape of a shotgun's grip is important because it affects how your hold the gun during use. For example, if your gun has an ill fitting grip you could lose control of the gun during recoil thus potentially injuring yourself and others. Sometimes the gun's comb has to be filed down to improve grip.
4. Stock Weight
Stock weight is important because it affects the balance of the gun, how smoothly it swings and its recoil. All three of those things can affect your comfort and shooting accuracy. For example, if you see a deer and are unable to effectively and efficiently get your gun into position, you could miss the shot.
5. Drop and Cast
The drop and cast of a gun are important because they both affect the position of your eye in relationship to the gun barrel. Drop refers to the elevation of your eye in relationship to the gun's barrel. Cast refers to how your eye lines up over the rib while the gun is mounted and whether the gun pulls to the left or the right during shooting. If you select a gun with a drop and cast that do not suit you, it could affect the accuracy of your shot. An improper cast and drop could also cause the gun stock to hit you in the face during recoil.
