So You Want to Be a UFO Hunter?

A few tips for newbies interested in hunting the skies for Unidentified Flying Objects.

When most people hear the term 'UFO', they usually think of aliens, but this is an entirely inaccurate description. UFO stands for 'unidentified flying object'. Nothing more and nothing less. Unless you have proof to the contrary that your sighting was otherworldly, then just take it for what it is: An unidentified flying object.

I have seen all sorts of strange things in the sky. While the majority of these encounters happened at night, I have had daytime sightings as well. All my life, I've gazed up at the stars in wonderment. In Nebraska, the sky is our ocean. Toward the end of 2020, I made a habit of going outside nightly to view the sky. I was inspired to do so after reading an article on the Yahoo! homepage about a UFO shutting down an airport in China. After three years of avid sky watching, I've picked up a few tricks along the way.

Use a star map.

Most smartphones have applications you can download to chart the stars in the sky, and they're pretty accurate too. In order to test their accuracy just point it at an object you're already familiar with, like the sun or the moon. In addition to star maps, there are similar applications that also detect space junk, satellites, and the International Space Station (ISS). While the application probably doesn't cover everything up there, it's still a great way to rule things out when looking for the unknown.

Check the flights in your area.

Before going out, or while outside, be sure to check to see what flights are listed to fly over your area. Again, not everything will be covered -- especially military movement -- but this will still be great to identify what, if anything, is already flapping around in your sky. FlightAware is a great tool for this, and they offer a smartphone application too.

Take note of any sounds you may hear.

Listen for the distinguishable sound of airplane engines or the whirling blades of a helicopter. Objects that can't be identified are usually either silent or emit sounds unfamiliar to the witness, but there are some exceptions. Military jets and meteors sometimes create sonic booms. However, military aircraft breaking the sound barrier is supposedly rare in residential areas because it's highly dangerous. The blast can cause windows and glass doors to explode, potentially injuring anyone near them.

In conjunction with UFO sightings, corroborated by my own experiences, many witnesses report hearing booms, humming sounds, jet roaring sounds that reverberate and on for an extended period of time, and metallic screeching noises. UFOs are not always visible when the audible phenomena occur, as you can see from some of the examples, but they are believed to be related. Personally, I have heard many of these sounds during several of my own UFO sightings.

Be aware of nearby airports or military bases.

This can give you an idea of how much air traffic you should expect in addition to the noises you may hear. Even if you live near an airport or a military base, this does not mean that you won't be able to spot any UFOs. It just means that you'll have to be extra observant.

Rule out communication towers, spotlights, and streetlights; but use them as guidance posts.

Sometimes the silliest things can play tricks on our eyes, especially when weather obscures visibility. On numerous occasions, I've had to laugh at my own gullibility. Deceiving as they may sometimes be, they can also be very helpful. The typical airplane does not hover just above treetop height and most known aircraft avoids getting too close to communication towers for the obvious reasons. Anything seen that low to the ground, especially if it's stationary or just floating around in the area, should be paid special attention.

This is only a small chunk of advice I can give to UFO hunters that are just starting out. It is, by no means, a complete guide to UFO hunting. There can never be a complete guide, and as you go along you will probably be adding things to your own list. In the meantime, I will continue my observations and continue to take note of any tips I can give that have helped me improved my own skills.
