Filmmaking Information for Actors - the Shooting Ratio
One of the most least discussed topics within the dominion of acting is shooting ratio, which refers to the total amount of film or footage that is actually filmed and used.
As a film actor, your life will seem like a continual learning experience. For the past decade I have spent the majority of my time researching not only acting techniques, but also filmmaking information. Being an actor, you should be well aware of the various techniques directors use to create a movie. As the old saying goes, "Knowledge is Power," and in the realm of film acting this saying is especially true.
One of the most least discussed topics within the dominion of acting is shooting ratio, which refers to the total amount of film or footage that is actually filmed and used.
The Shooting Ratio
As hinted at above, the official definition of the shooting ratio is the usable footage that was captured during a day of filming versus the non-usable footage that has been captured. Basically, the shooting ratio are the minutes captured on film that the director wishes to keep and store for editing compared to the scenes that were shot, but are deemed inappropriate for editing.
For major motion pictures, it is not unlikely to have a shooting ratio of 15:1, which means if the crew films a scene 15 times then they are within their daily goal of using at least one of the 15 takes. However, the shooting ratio is much lower as the budget is lower. No/Low budget films typically have a shooting ratio anywhere between 5:1 and 2:1. Basically, the smaller the shooting ratio the more nerve wracking the set becomes as this means the crew nor the cast can flub too many takes as this will take away from the films budget, or lack thereof.
What Shooting Ratio Means for the Actor
When I talk about the importance of the shooting ratio, many actors look at me with a blank stare and say, "That's great and all, but what does this have to do with me…the actor?" It has EVERYTHING to do with you.
As an actor you are primarily in control of the number of takes the film crew has to capture. Yes, there are other circumstances, such as incorrect lighting or an audio boom in the shot, but more than not, if a scene has to be reshot it's due to an actor error.
When you're working on a big-budget film, you have the luxury of being able to have multiple takes; however, most of the time you must keep the film's budget in mind every time the camera starts rolling. It is your job to ensure your performance is spotless throughout each take to minimize the shooting ratio. Not only will this benefit you as the actor as you'll have great shots the director can choose from, but it will also benefit the entire production.
