How to Make a Homemade Bunsen Burner

Learn how to use a used shotgun shell to create a Bunsen burner for your homeschool chemistry projects and experiments.

There are a few materials that you will need to make your homemade Bunsen burner. The first of these is a discarded used shotgun shell. Next you will need some candle wax or paraffin and a small saucepan to melt it in. Then finally you will need a funnel to pour the hot wax through. When you have these materials gathered you can begin construction of your Bunsen burner. All of these materials should be relatively inexpensive to obtain at the local rifle range and grocery store.

To begin construction of the Bunsen burner, place the discarded used shotgun shell on a flat surface with the open end facing up. Then use the saucepan to melt the candle wax over a low heat on a stove top. Now insert the funnel into the top of the discarded used shotgun shell. Next fill the shotgun shell completely with hot wax by pouring the wax from the saucepan and into the funnel. Once the shotgun shell is completely filled with wax remove the funnel and allow it to cool and harden. The homemade Bunsen burner has been completed at this point.

To use the homemade Bunsen burner follow these instructions. First place a tiny piece of dryer lint into the open end of the shotgun shell where it has been filled with wax. Now use a match or lighter to light the dryer lint. This will burn and set the wax on fire and start the homemade Bunsen burner to burning in a matter of just a couple of minutes. Then the aspiring chemist can use the homemade Bunsen burner for either their own lab project or for the lab project assigned by their homeschooling program.
