How to Make Your Money Last While Job Hunting

Advice and ideas for people trying to make a small amount of money last as long as possible. Making a budget work while dealing with sudden unemployed or prolonged job hunting can be nearly impossible. I hope others will benefit from my experience.

1) One of the most important things to do in order to keep the lights on and the car in the driveway is to call the companies you need to pay, even if you don't have a nickel to give them. Many businesses will work with you if they see you are making an effort to be upfront about your situation. I have kept my cell phone service connected for almost three months now, simply because I call periodically and update them. I also got an extension on my electric bill, car insurance, and car payment. You may be asked to set up payment times in the future. Do it. Then be sure you call them on the appointed day, whether you have the money yet or not. Most businesses know that having a faithful customer who is a little behind is more profitable than looking for new customers.

2) Grocery shopping can be a nightmare for a family with little money, especially if the adults are busy and don't feel they have time to cook. I'm no gourmet chef I've found a few simple ideas that really helped me change the way I shop and the way I cook to fit a small budget. Much of my inspiration came from Cook For Good, which is a great site for recipes and advice about cooking on a tight budget. However, here are the few tips I've found most helpful. Cook at least one pot of dried beans a week (about two pounds for a family of four). Beans are cheap, filling, healthy, and full of protein. They come in many varieties and can be seasoned and served in a huge number of ways to keep the menu interesting. For about four dollars (that includes buying water, because our tap water is awful) I can make flavorful food that will feed my husband and I for several days. For example, half a cup of beans over rice is delicious, or we'll have inexpensive seasonal vegetables like cabbage or potatoes on the side. If we get tired of one batch before it's gone, I freeze the leftovers in zipper sandwich bags for later use and make a new pot that tastes completely different. Brown rice is also a good staple as it can be used as a filling side dish to make any meat or other main dish go further. Also, avoid prepared meals or frozen food if possible. It costs more for less and the nutritional value is often doubtful on the more affordable items.

3) Those tactics will only take you so far, money has to be found eventually. If you are anything like my husband or myself, job hunting may not be going well. I found a way to bring in a little bit of income while I search through Amazon's Mechanical Turk job board. The pay isn't great but I've made enough for gas and food I would otherwise not have been able to get. Be selective though, some tasks will send you to scam websites that try to get you to sign up for something. For legitimate jobs that won't result in heaps of spam being sent your way, look for surveys being conducted by college students or tasks requesting short articles. I use Firefox as my web browser and have an add-on called Web of Trust that alerts me when I get redirected to sites that have a bad reputation. Another site to consider using with Mechanical Turk is Media Piston. Signing up and making a profile on their site gives you access to more of their assignments on MT. They are strict about plagiarism, grammar and spelling but they mostly want short articles written in simple terms, and they offer bonuses for good quality work. I'm also trying out Yahoo's because I've heard good things about it and so far it seems quite easy to use.

So, there you have it. This isn't an exhaustive list, by any means, but I have kept my family going for several months with these ideas, along with a lot of faith that things will improve. I hope, through this article, that others can benefit from my experience and avoid some of my mistakes. Good luck.
