Black Bear Recovery in Texas

Black bears are making a comeback where they had once been driven out. Find out why this recovery happened here.

These bear sightings have grown more numerous. This shows that the black bear is on its way to making a significant comeback, which has surprised scientists and civilians alike. Does this mean that people need to start to worry about spending time outdoors? The answer is no, but caution must be taken. However, caution should be taken anytime time is spent outdoors.

The black bear's diet is mostly vegetarian. This might come as a shock, but according to Texas Parks and Wildlife, the black Bbear eats fresh leaves, fruits, berries, nuts, roots, insects, and small mammals eaten when the opportunity arises. This helps the black bears recovery since it should protect them from farmers who might think they are after their livestock. Despite this, Black bears have been known to attack humans.

Black bears status in Texas and the United States are threatened with extinction. They are protected from being hunted in Texas. However, Black bears have been shot, but mainly because the hunter thought it was a feral pig. The Texas Parks and Wildlife even warn feral pig hunters to make sure they are not aiming at a black bear instead of a hog.

The black bear that is making a comeback in Texas is the Mexican black bear. However, Texas Parks and Wildlife believes that potential habitat exists in east Texas for the threatened Louisiana Black Bear. There are currently no official sightings of the Louisiana black bear in Texas.

The recovery of the Black Bear in Texas is only one of a few successful species to be able to recover from human pressure. Bald Eagle is probably the best example that a species on the brink of destruction can be saved. The biggest hurdle for most species recovery is habitat destruction.

I have lived in central Texas for over 25 years now. However, I have yet to encounter a black bear in Texas. I have seen Black Bears in the wild, but in northern states like Wisconsin. I am awaiting an opportunity to see these bears in the process of reclaiming their territory. Hopefully, other apex predators can soon make take the same course.
