EMF Theory and Detectors in the Paranormal Community -- What Are They Really Measuring?
Have you ever wondered how relevant that EMF detector reading is when ghost hunting? The answer is that it may just be noise.
Hypersensitivity to relatively low amplitude electromagnetic waves (for example the 0.1 to 1.0 Hz generated by TV's, hair dryers or fluorescent lights) has been tentatively established. Anyone suffering from this kind of reaction might develop headaches, dizziness, heart palpitations, and nausea that could last as long as three days after a "toxic dose." Skeptics and paranormal investigators often blame moderately high EMF levels (30 Hz to 5 MHz) in an environment for inducing feelings of paranoia and dread. They theorize that chronic exposures like these can create hallucinatory episodes which may account for alleged supernatural experiences. Contrast the biological impact of all this low-to-moderate electromagnetic frequency activity with the fact that an MRI exam will expose you to brief periods of five times or more the dose known to freak sensitives out.
Most lay people don't have a firm grasp on the relationship between the units of measurement being used (Gauss versus Hertz). The meters most commonly used by paranormal investigation groups measure flux density in the range of 30 to 20,000 Hz and report disturbances or "spikes" in increments of magnetic field strength called milliGauss (mG). A huge problem is immediately evident in that the fluctuations they are supposedly measuring are far outside the range of accurate calibration. The better units can produce +/- 5% accuracy at 50 to 60 Hz. Attempting to measure activity more minute than that will usually result in amplifying noise and mistaking it for data. Add lights on the meter if you want to, it's good TV, but bad science.
Many of the paranormal investigation team's tech managers are also evidently unaware that according to the laws of quantum mechanics, any measurement of energy changes the system being measured, resulting in uncertainty. In addition, radiated radio signals (of which EMFs are a part) are omnidirectional. So if the meter is not sensitive enough to accurately quantify the amount of change nor reliably able to determine the extent of the affected space, all we're left with is the apparent change in stasis. In other words, the disturbance is either there or it isn't. Sometimes there's more, sometimes there's less.
Even "free range" fluctuations, those without apparent cause, are much more likely to be distant stray pulses from some device (especially now in the digital age) or even eddies in the Earth's natural magnetic environment. The investigators are focusing on the amplitude of the signal and the resulting flux demonstrated, ignoring the frequency, essentially trying to assign a cause and effect argument without a complete frame of reference. So what are they really finding?
