Saving Money Using a Programmable Thermostat
You can save as much as 50% off your heating and cooling costs with a programmable thermostat.
I'm always looking for ways to save money. So to try and save more on electricity, I bought one of those programmable thermostats. The theory is that you program it based on the temperature you want the house during certain times of the day and the season.
You set the thermostat so that when you are away from home, say at work, then the air conditioner or heater (depending on the season) doesn't run until it needs to so that the house is at your pre-selected temperature when you return home. You can even set it for when you are sleeping so that the house is warm when you wake. This makes it possible to save substantial amounts on your energy bill; in some cases as much as 50%.
The problem is that the programmable thermostat needs to be programmed and then left alone. It's not supposed to be reprogrammed every 6-8 hours. It doesn't hurt it or anything it just defeats the purpose. It also defeats it's ability to save me money on electricity.
I like the temperature in the house to be around 74 degrees all year; any warmer than that and I get cranky. I'm fine if it's cooler than that but my husband isn't and neither is our spoiled antique Pomeranian. My husband prefers that the temperature in the house is about 80 degrees. We compromise, it's 74 and he puts on a sweater. Plus, I don't get cranky.
I like cool weather. That's rather like saying fish like water. For me, the perfect outside temperature is nothing over 75 degrees. Being cold doesn't bother me nearly as much as being hot. It's for this reason that I work in a room with a blocked heating vent and an open window when the outside temperature is in the 30's. If I lived alone I could save a fortune on my electric bill in winter. I would use the money to pay my summer cooling bill.
Now the programmable thermostat is a great idea but in the case of my home there are two vastly competing forces (me and my husband) trying to tell it what to do and when to do it. He wants the house warmer at night than during the day. I want it colder. That is the downside of having a programmable thermostat. Unless you get one with a code lock on it; that just might be my next purchase.
