National Turkey Calling Championship Decides Best Turkey Caller
Wild Turkey calling is an art and a competitive one. The National Turkey Calling Championship crowned Stephen Richardson a winner for the third year.
What does it take to be a turkey caller? It takes practice and a good turkey calling instrument. This instrument must help the competitor imitate the male turkey(gobbler). The contenders decide on the type of call that they want, locator, friction, predator, or diaphragm calls. Then after they get the instrument of choice, their job is to practice. There are various manufacturers of these calls, even some made by hand by experienced callers.
The competition features the "spit and drum" calls, along with some creative crow and owl calls. The competitors are many, and the competition is stiff.
The Wild Turkey Bourbon/NWTF which conducts the contest is a national nonprofit conservation and hunting organization, that works for the conservation of the wild turkey. According to their website, there are more than 7 million birds throughout North America.
The contest awards more than $25,000 in cash to the top callers in nine divisions. These prizes and the actual sport of turkey calling makes this a much attended event.
This year, as in the past three years, Stephan Richardson from Arkansas won the turkey calling event. The winner must perform on a stage with thousands of callers from throughout the world listening to his efforts.
The first place trophy winner is certainly judged by his peers.
Some tips that were given at the convention by experience turkey callers, were to start yelping or clucking softly, then increase the volume gradually.
Another popular tip was to keep the mouth calls in shape by refrigerating them or keeping them in a dark place. Stick a toothpick or paper clip between the reeds when storing.
The best way to turkey call is to use videos as instruction tools. Another popular tip given was to practice, and more practice is needed to become one of the best callers.
There are many stories and hints provided in the turkey hunting magazines. Another suggestion for learning more about the sport is by attending seminars held at sporting shows.
