How to Go Squirrel Hunting
Squirrel hunting takes patience and a good aim.
Good Vision; A Squirrel can blend in to their environment very easily. Black, sometimes referred to as Gray, along with Brown Squirrels can match up with branches and leaves. A patient hunter has to have keen eyesight to locate them. On a windless day, they are easier to spot; On a windy day, you have to see them moving or watch for their tail to move.
Patience; A good hunter can move quietly or sit and wait for their prey to move. A hunter that is in a hurry, is an unsafe hunter as well. Squirrels have keen senses. However, they don't have the same patience of a human being. Squirrels will always go to the opposite side of a tree. A good hunter can get them to move into their line of range by tossing a stick or rock to the other side of the tree. If there are two hunters, have one hunter move to the other side. Although many hunters do this, I find it to be an unsafe tactic myself.
Steady Aim; A good hunter has a steady aim when they prepare to shoot. It doesn't matter if you use a rifle or shotgun. A good hunter must have a steady aim. You don't need a high caliber gun. Shotgun is preferred when there are a lot of leaves. Once they fall, a rifle is preferred by many. A good hunter will aim at the chest and head area of a Squirrel. A good hunter will try to avoid just wounding an animal. A wounded animal is usually taken advantage of by other animals. So a good hunter is always trying to get a quick effective kill.
Safety; All hunters have to use good safety techniques. Never shoot toward the ground or the low area of a tree. Shooting down can occur if you are on a ridge overlooking a low area. Always have your safety in the locked position. Try to never fire with a person or dog in front of you. Notice, I said try not to. There are instances when a person will be in front of you and you will shoot upward into the tree tops. When crossing over a fence, have your partner hold your gun while you cross. Then, do the same for them. Don't run with a loaded gun. You can still move quickly enough without running. Always have the barrel pointed toward the ground when you move. Lastly, always know what and where you are shooting at. Get the big picture. Look beyond where your prey is located.
Squirrel hunting can be fun and challenging. Remember to follow the laws of the State and practice good safety habits. Happy hunting.
