When to Hunt for Morel Mushrooms
Usually around the middle of April, around the time the poplar trees begin to bloom, the elusive morel mushrooms begin to show themselves in the woods. Conditions have to be perfect for the spores to sprout. Typically, a nice sunny day after an April shower is the best time to go hunting for morel mushrooms. They hang around for no more than a month before succumbing to the heat and drying up.
Where to Hunt for Morel Mushrooms
The best places to look for morel mushrooms are in fruit orchards where there are full size fruit trees (not miniatures), around the edges where fields meet a wooded area with good timber, or in the woods where a bit of sunlight shines through. A prime location would be a good mix of poplar, cherry and maple trees. Fertile ground around fallen, rotting trees and areas where other types of mushrooms grow is a good place to look. However, there is no need to waste any time looking where the timber has been cut because too much sun in these areas has killed out all the spores.

Once you've located an ideal spot for mushrooms to grow, you have to be able to look beyond the camouflage in the area to find them. They blend in well and are easy to overlook. Walking slowly and carefully scanning the area from downhill, looking uphill will give you an advantage. Morel mushrooms tend to peak out from below leaves, hidden when you are looking downhill.
